Just Thinking Out Loud and the Lens of Identity Politics
“You were the only woman up there with a lot of older white men”. This is what the CBS news anchor had to say to Elizabeth Holmes, the now notorious ex-CEO of Theranos, a supposed biotech empire built on promises and the push of identity politics.
The cultural backdrop behind the rise of Elizabeth Holmes was one of programs geared towards helping “underrepresented” groups, underrepresented in that they weren’t statistically present enough at prominent levels of achievement, such as female leadership in traditionally male-represented industries.
In this case, what helped push Elizabeth’s story to the top, was the fact that she was a woman, breaking through the glass ceiling int he corporate world. Her achievement, that everyone thought was honest back then, had to be contrasted with that of the men, by race and gender. It couldn’t just stand on its own…
